Archive of 2022: Hot autumn outfit in style of 1952 with real vintage hat by “Gina Chapeus Modas” from Porto, Portugal
With this new outfit, I show you an unusually shaped hat by “Gina Chapeus Modas”. I bought this hat two years ago in Portugal, through a Spanish online platform for collectors.
Although, of course, calling it a platform for collectors is not entirely correct. Since the most part there are garbage or a modern mass market at very high prices.
However, this hat was not very expensive for this place and together with a delivery cost me about 15 euros. Unfortunately, my experience with this seller was not the best. Because the seller saved its money on packaging the parcel, as if it hoped that I would not receive this hat or that I would receive it completely broken. The seller didn't even reply to my emails afterwards.
Fortunately, the hat was only slightly damaged during shipment, slightly wrinkled. I had to do its restoration.
Searches for information about its producer, boutique “Gina Chapeus Modas”, did not give me much results. As I wrote before, this always has happened when we pay attention to European fashion brands that are unknown in America.
The hat label bears the address "302 rua de dom Manuel II, Porto". As it would expected in the Portuguese Porto, this boutique no longer exists.
The only thing I was able to find, and that, probably thanks to the address indicated on the label, is the mention of “Gina Chapeus Modas” in a two-volume study on fashion in Portugal from 1914 to 1999, published on the Academia.edu website in 2011, by Valter Carlos Cardim.
From this research, I was able to find out that "Gina Chapeus Modas" was owned and possibly founded by a certain woman named Gina Souto.
"Gina Chapeus Modas" was mentioned at least since the late 1950s and until about the mid-1970s, in periodicals of that time (reference books, fashion magazines, etc.).
However, it is quite possible that "Gina Chapeus Modas" existed before that date.
Dating this hat is very, very difficult. From the way it's sewn, I'd guess it's from the 1930s or 1940s. But that doesn't stop me from wearing this hat with a 1950s style outfit.
I am wearing:
- (on some photos) Real vintage navy linen swing bolero by “Fenn Wright Manson”, made in UK, about 1980s-1990s
- (partly seen on some photos) Real vintage navy linen sleeveless blouse, about 1970s-1980s
- Real vintage navy with red and light blue abstract print border cotton swing full circle skirt, about 1950s
- (not seen) White cotton petticoat, about 1990s-2010s
- (not seen) Black pure silk petticoat, about 2010s
- Real vintage light navy linen hat with ecru bow and velvet dots decor by “Gina Chapeus Modas” (Gina Souto, 302 rua de dom Manuel II, Porto), made in Portugal, about 1930s-1940s
- Real vintage two toned blue plastic round clip-on earrings, about late 1950s (probably 1957)
- Red coral heavy necklace by “Bijoux Brigitte”, about 2000s-2010s
- Handmade dark red leather belt by “ReVolt”, Italian style by Remo Salvador, made in Italy, about 1990-2000s
- Real vintage dark blue straw basket handbag with two round handles, about 1950s
- Dark blue suede lace up oxford brogues shoes by “El Ganso”, made in Spain, about 2000 (but not earlier then 2002)–2020s
I think I got an outfit in the style of about 1952.
Combined with a swing full circle skirt, a swing bolero and a sleeveless blouse, my older style hat gives the impression of a toque or half hat of 1950s, fitting in very harmoniously with the overall style.
I tried to create splashes of color with accessories to match the red and light blue abstract print border on the skirt. Two spots of red - beads and a belt and one spot of light blue - clip-on earrings.
