Cool/warm spring outfit in style of 1948-1949s & "New Look" with real vintage sheath dress by “Margrit Graf”

It was very difficult to find any information about the “Margrit Graf” brand of my dark gray dress. Unfortunately, the Internet knows a lot about American clothing manufacturers, but from Europe only knows about major masters such as Christian Dior, Gabrielle Chanel, etc.

Meanwhile, there were other people who made their considerable contribution to local fashion, who created things not in on such a large scale and therefore every piece of clothing that has survived, in my opinion, should be valued no less than a dress from Dior. After all, this is a part of the history of the country, the city, and the World.

Because when you read the history of vintage fashion and everywhere you see continuous references to France and Paris, America and New York, a natural question creeps in, was there really nothing in other countries and cities at that time? Did people go naked there?

Of course it was not. Of course they didn't.

Therefore, for me, finding clothes from some small local European brands, ateliers, or boutique is very exciting. As well as it is fascinating and exciting to learn at least something about this manufacturer. Even if there is little information, it is still there and still I feel some kind of invisible connection through these clothes with other times, places, peoples, and history.

From what I have been able to find regarding "Margrit Graf", this brand was already in existence around 1939 and was mentioned as a clothing manufacturer until 1970 in all sorts of Austrian trade, industrial, export directories and registers. I also managed to find its address to make sure of the sad fact - "Margrit Graf" does not exist any more. A furniture store is now open in its place.

Meanwhile, the dress is wonderful, in my opinion, no worse than the Parisian “Haute Couture”. To be honest, this is my first dress in a similar style, and not only vintage, but in general. For a long time, I dreamed of a tight, fitted dress made of wool.

I bought it a relatively long time ago, at the end of the passed year, in a Spanish vintage store, but I could only wear it this spring. Most importantly, this dress was brand new. It's so nice to find old new things that seem to have been created just for you and have been waiting for you for so many decades.

I thought for a long time what hat to combine it with and opted for a hat that is absolutely inappropriate in the cold season, which must be worn on its one side. However, the benefit of warm weather - you can wear what you just like. But a hat in warm weather is not useless, it sufficiently covers the head and face from the hot sun, helping to maintain my favorite pallor.

I don't like sunburn, but I don't like sunscreen either. What to do! The most optimal protection for me from the burning Spanish sun is a good beautiful hat.

Without a cardigan, this outfit is ideal for warm weather, and with a cardigan for a little bit cooler one. I wore it in mixed warm-cool weather in the middle of April.

I am wearing:
  • Real vintage dark gray pure wool long sleeve midi sheath dress by “Margrit Graf”, Wien, (GRAF MARGRIT OHG Nelkengasse 4 Wien VI Tel. 56 23 71), about late 1940s-early 1950s
  • (on some photos) Brown-grey-black-beige with geometric pattern hand-loomed alpaca zip cardigan sweater by “Millma - Bolivia”, made in Bolivia, about 2000s
  • Real vintage brown wool felt hat with felt décor and veil, about circa 1930s
  • Real vintage brown wild crocodile belt, made in Germany, about 1950s
  • Real vintage gray nylon handbag by “Sebastian”, about 1960s
  • Gray leather gloves with flared cuffs, about 2010-2020s
  • Beige tights, about 2000s-2010s
  • Real vintage brown suede shoes with mid-high heels by “Gabor”, 1970s-1980s, made in Germany

What year is this outfit? Judging by the style and quality of hat execution - the 1930s. But the same could be worn in the 1940s and 1950s. The dress is typical of the 1948-1949s, so in general the image turned out to be harmonious in time - the end of the 1940s, the heyday of the "New Look". I think Christian Dior would appreciate my look!
