Hot summer outfit in style of 1936 with real vintage straw basket handbag
I have very few 1930s-style clothes in my wardrobe, and as for the really vintage things of those times, in general, only hats.
It's sad, because I love this period very much. I like long dresses, skirts and coats, as well as capes and raincoats.
While finding a vintage and even "a la" vintage outerwear is problematic, it is possible to reproduce lighter outfits in the style of the 1930s with the help of things from later times. For example, in the same 1970s, stylizations "a la" the 1930s were fashionable.
Therefore, there are dresses from that period that, accompanied by the right accessories, will help to recreate the look of a fatal beauty or a Hollywood diva of the 1930s.
In cut and print, my dress is somewhat similar to a 1936 dress from McCall's Printed Pattern. I bought it a year ago from a vintage shop and it was brand new.
Dress does not have a lining, but the silk is quite dense and, importantly, opaque. Now such silks are no longer produced. After all, I wear a slip dress under my dress, so lack of lining is not a problem anyway!
Without tight lacing, the dress looks like a loose shirt, but once you tighten the lacing on the back, it becomes a very feminine fitted outfit. Dresses and corsets with lacing are always associated in me with something medieval and fantasy.
The woven basket bag is my lucky purchase, from the same "flea store" as the refurbished straw wide brim platter hat.
Perhaps the bag is more 1950s than 1930s. Its form seems typical for the 1950s.
In particular, in the Sears catalog for 1956 there is a similar model made of leather. But I could not find similar ones from straw there.
I would say that this bag is unique due to the combination of shape, material and color.
In addition, there is something classical and pastoral about it, something from the canvases of artists of the 18th and 19th centuries.
I am wearing:
- Real vintage blue gray with navy, green and yellow floral print pure silk below the knees length straight dress, with short sleeves, round neckline and lacing on the back by “STON”, about 1970s
- (not seen) Cream pure silk slip dress by “Hoss Intropia”, 2010s-2020s
- Real vintage dark blue viscose straw wide brim hat with ribbon and flower decor, about 1960s
- Real vintage dark blue leather belt, about 1970s-1980s
- Real vintage dark blue straw basket handbag with two round handles, about 1950s
- Dark blue leather mid heel long-toed slim penny loafers, made in Spain, 2020s
I got an outfit in the style of the late 1930s: with a dress stylized presumably for 1936, with a hat similar to the models of the 1930s, shoes from the mid-1930s (according to various sources; similar shoes appeared either in 1934, or in 1936, with the name "penny loafers" appeared later, in 1950!), but perhaps with small elements of the 1950s. From those times is a basket bag.
However, I think that in the 1930s, there could have been a similar bag ... why not? After all, fashion is cyclical! So my whole outfit may well be in the style of 1936!
